CASH CAB
I was part of a team of three on a business trip to Korea for some contentious negotiations with a client. Since our flights had all arrived around the same time, we met outside baggage claim and decided to take a cab together to the hotel. The three of us plus our sizable luggages wouldn't fit in a regular cab, so one of my colleagues decided to flag down a van taxi. Except that most of the vans outside the airport had been pre-booked or reserved separately, so we went from van to van, and finally found one that seemed large enough to accommodate us.
My coworkers and I each had 20 year age gaps between us: one of us in our twenties, forties and sixties. Needless to say, we didn't look like a usual group of coworkers. Our van taxi driver was very enthused at having us as his passengers. As the youngest one, I had to go right to the back of the van, while my ultra-focused coworkers got to share the second row of seats and immediately started talking about the upcoming meetings.
My friends, this was no ordinary van. As soon as we pulled onto the highway, our taxi driver took it upon himself to make the drive a fun Korean experience.A string of multicoloured lights went on revealing a mirrored ceiling panel and TV screen. Our driver exclaimed: "WELCOME KOREA, Family!". In order to make our "family vacation" even more authentic, he effectively turned our van into a party bus. He started playing K-Pop music videos on full blast, with the bass booming loudly as we drove through traffic and set the multicoloured light effects to play with the music beat.
The best part? My coworkers and I continued to talk negotiation strategy while Gangnam Style and other K-Pop hits pounded through the speakers. Despite asking the driver to turn the volume down, he refused to believe that the three of us worked together and laughed to himself repeating "Family! / Vacation! / KOREA!" excitedly.
So there you have it, even a business trip can turn into a "family vacation" in a Cash Cab-esque van!
